The Digital Scholarship and Publishing team provides access to the library's resources, expertise, and services in support of a broad range of digital and data-intensive scholarly activities. We also support the publication and sharing of data and scholarship. From designing a digital humanities project to writing a data management plan for a grant application, we’re here to help.
Some of our main areas of support include:
We work with students, faculty, staff, and researchers from all disciplines at Pitt, and we strive to facilitate and raise the visibility of collaborative and interdisciplinary work.
We offer a wide variety of workshops that are open to anyone interested in working with data, learning digital tools and methods, or sharing their research in new ways. We also provide instruction by request for undergraduate classes, graduate seminars, research teams, and other groups. Please see our instruction page to learn more!
Do you have questions about working with data or how to communicate the results of your research in different venues or formats? We're available to help you plan a new digital project, integrate a digital assignment into your course, or learn more about particular software or methods. Contact us to make an appointment!
The Digital Scholarship Lab is located on the ground floor of Hillman Library and provides access to high-powered workstations equipped with specialized software for digital projects. Students and faculty working on digital projects are welcome to stop by the Lab for individual or collaborative work; workstations are available on a first-come, first-served basis and open for use whenever there are no events taking place in the Lab. These computers have over thirty software titles available, including applications for 3D modeling, performing data analysis, video editing and more. View the list of available software titles.
The Open Lab @ Hillman also offers access to a 12-workstation computer lab with specialized software, a variety of public scanners, and a station for Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
The Digital Scholarship and Publishing team connects researchers with other sources of methodological and technological expertise at the University.
We also support forming connections across Pitt through informal communities of practice on a variety of topics, including our Panthers Practicing Python (P3) community and Adobe Study Group sessions in the Open Lab. All Pitt community members are welcome to participate in these informal learning communities!
Graduate students: During most academic years, we run a Summer Graduate Student Internship program and offer a Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) position open to students in the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. These paid positions offer opportunities to acquire foundational digital scholarship knowledge and participate in collaborative digital project work.
Undergraduate students: In collaboration with the Open Lab @ Hillman we offer a “Research and Development (R&D) in the Open Lab” Summer undergraduate internship program. The ULS also hires undergraduate student workers.
Please see internship and student employment descriptions and any open calls for applications on our Student Opportunities page.
