Specialized Digitization

The ULS offers standard digitization services to request an article or book chapter from our collection that is not online; we also offer self-service scanners. For more specialized needs, ULS digitization services are available to University of Pittsburgh Faculty, Students, Staff, and project partners.

Scope of Services

Requests can be made for digitization of photographic materials, texts, manuscripts, maps, and similar print media up to 33x46 inches and transparent media up to 11x14 inches. Priority for digitization services is given to material from collections held by the University Library System. Whenever possible we seek to make digitized content openly available by adding it to our managed online ULS digital collections.

Turnaround Times

Requests up to 25 images can usually be completed within 7-10 business days. For requests involving more than 25 images, staff from ULS digitization services will work with you to determine the feasibility and turnaround time for the request. Please note: for all requests, turnaround times may vary depending on the current digitization workload and the specific nature of the material being digitized.

Making a Request

The Digital Stewardship Lab, located in Hillman Library's Digital Scholarship Commons, is a front-end to ULS digitization services. During its open hours, staff are available to assist with digitization requests on a walk-up basis. If you are not able to visit the lab, or it is closed, please start with the Ask Us email form. Along with your contact information and affiliation, please use the “Question” field to include a physical description of the item(s) as well as the type and quantity of scans requested. After submitting your request, you will receive a reply from ULS digitization services staff. Before proceeding with the request, staff may wish to set up a consultation to gather more information and examine items.

Copyright

The copyright law of the U.S. (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to make a photocopy or reproduction. One of the specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for a purpose which does not qualify as "fair use," or does not secure the necessary permissions from the copyright owner to publish, that user may be individually liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law or other applicable law.
