Bibliometrics is the study of published works through an analysis of citations, references, and other indicators of use and impact. Altmetrics applies a similar approach to non-traditional forms of scholarly sharing, including repository downloads, social media shares, and news and popular press mentions. Bibliometric and altmetric measures can be used to better understand the research landscape and the position of an individual researcher, research group, or institution within it.
Bibliometric and altmetric data, when used responsibly and in context, can be used as evidence of impact in grant, job, or promotion applications.
Citation databases and other tools that track use of research outputs can be valuable in providing evidence of the volume and impact of research activity both within the scholarly community (research impact) and in a broader community (social impact).
