Welcome to the Media Labs at Hillman Library! 

The Media Labs are a suite of media creation and experiential learning spaces operated by Media Services. They are available for reservation and use by University of Pittsburgh students, faculty and staff. 

The Media Labs are located on the Ground Floor of the Hillman Library.  Spaces include:

  • Media Lab: Film- A black box studio for media creation, photography and film production (Room G43) 
  • Media Lab: Audio - A studio for producing, recording and mixing high-quality audio (Room G44) 
  • Post-Production Suites - Two suites with computers equipped with post-production and animation equipment and software (Rooms G46 and G47) 
  • One Button Studio - An all-in-one recording room for creating professional-quality video and audio with minimal technical experience (Room G45) 

Equipment is available to borrow for use in the Media Labs spaces, including cameras, audio and lighting equipment, and more. Use of this equipment is subject to the Media Services Borrowing / Use Policies and Agreement.

The Media Lab: Film is a black box studio tailored toward instructional and experiential learning in media production and photography. 900 square feet, equipped with multiple backdrops for various shooting scenarios, and lit by a customizable lighting grid with console, the studio is ideal for projects like: 

  • Narrative and documentary film, music videos, and other film/media projects 
  • Live or filmed interviews, discussions and panel conversations 
  • Filmed instructional material 
  • Portrait, product or archival photography 
  • Instruction and workshops on any of the above and more 

The studio reserves in 2-3 hour blocks during Media Labs operating hours. 

*Reservation of the studio is contingent upon completion of our Media Labs Orientation and Media Lab: Film Canvas Modules (Coming soon!). Please note that all users accessing the space must at least complete the Media Labs orientation. Only the user reserving the space and/or borrowing Media Labs equipment is required to pass our Media Lab: Film quiz.* 

The Media Lab: Audio, located in the Calderone Media Row, is a fully-furnished, acoustically-treated recording studio. 400 square feet and segmented for multi-purpose use, the studio is ideal for projects like: 

  • Recording and mixing video and/or audio podcasts with 1-5 users 
  • Live or filmed interviews, discussions and panel conversations 
  • Recording and mixing foley effects for audio-visual media 
  • Recording and mixing isolated vocal recordings (e.g. singing performances, speech, voiceover) 
  • Instruction and workshops on any of the above and more 
  • The studio reserves in 1-2 hour blocks during Media Labs operating hours.

The Editing Suites, located in the Calderone Media Row, are equipped for media post-production, photography editing, and animation, among other uses. They are reservable in 30-minute increments during Hillman Library operating hours. 

The One Button Studio, located in the Calderone Media Row, is a simplified recording space tailored for users with minimal experience creating media content. With a flash drive and the push of a single button, you can record instructional material, vlogs, speeches and other vocal performances, etc. with customizable backgrounds using the studio’s built-in green screen. 

The One Button Studio is reservable in 30-minute increments and is available during Hillman Library operating hours.

Media Services will foster an inclusive and dynamic community at the University of Pittsburgh, where students, faculty, and staff across all disciplines can explore, create, and collaborate through media and media production. We aim to support and empower our community by providing access to state-of-the-art spaces and resources for film and audio production. By partnering with instructors and designing learning opportunities, we strive to cultivate the skills and creativity of our patrons, ensuring they have the tools and knowledge to excel in both curricular and non-curricular projects. Through these efforts, we aspire to build a vibrant interdisciplinary network of media creators and learners, contributing to a rich and innovative academic environment at Pitt.
