GIS Day 2024: Sustainable Communities and Technologies

Join us at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) for a GIS Day celebration on Wednesday, November 20th, 2024. The theme of the event is Sustainable Communities and Technologies and will be hosted in CMU’s Cohon University Center. Register to attend the event. The event is all day and in-person.

We would love for you to share your work at GIS Day! This year we are hosting a day long symposium with the theme Sustainable Communities and Technologies. We welcome wide participation in a variety of topic areas including: social and economic research, arts and culture, broad implementations of the sustainable development goals that include social and cultural practices, spatial applications of AI, creating a sustainable local GIS community, using GIS tools, and of course research in Policy, Architecture, Urban Studies, Geography, GIScience, Digital Humanities, Environmental Studies, Engineering, and more.

If you aren’t sure - submit it to us anyway! We especially want students to submit talks and maps, you only need a description to submit & it doesn’t have to be perfect. This event is open to all folks in the Pittsburgh Region. We hope this event is a day for people from across the Pittsburgh region to mingle and learn. Questions? Reach out to Jessica Benner (jbenner at andrew.cmu.edu)

Submissions are open to anyone in the Western PA region. Submit your work for participation by October 10th. We will notify participants of acceptance by October 25th.

We are accepting submissions for the following:

Lightning talks (3-5 minutes)
Short 3-5 minute talk about something you’ve been working on or think people should know.

Map (to be displayed in a map gallery)
A map that you created. We will have a virtual map gallery for all submissions and a select few will be chosen for display at the event. Maps displayed at the event will need to be printed poster size.

Tabling at Open House (1 hour)
Organizations, companies, informal groups or people with research demonstrations can set up a table at the open house to share your services, swag or research.

Workshop style talks (1 hour, these will be scheduled before and after the event in November)
A longer presentation with an interactive portion that aims to teach participants about a way of thinking, skill, method, tool or dataset. Topics can broadly connect to any aspect of location, space, place, spatial thinking, maps, GIS and don’t have to be focused on technology.

Volunteers
If you want to help out leading up to or during the event, you can submit your name as a volunteer and we will contact you to learn your interest.

Submit your contribution by October 10th. We will notify participants of acceptance by October 25th.
