All day the Media Labs will be screening period films that feature celestial themes. Whether you want to sit back and watch the entire flick or just need a quick break from studying, feel free to swing by. From the historical, to the mythical, to the outright outlandish, there is sure to be something to catch your interest: Agora (2009), The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013), Cowboys & Aliens (2011), and Hercules against the Moon Men (1964). 

Join us on the ground floor of Hillman Library for a study break! This study break will feature space-themed activities, trivia, and prizes in celebration of the library’s Origins of Astronomy Week.  

Stop by the Text & conText Lab @ Hillman Library to print an astronomy design on the Columbian Press, reproduced from rare books in Archives & Special Collections. Learn about early printing techniques used to create illustrations of the stars and heavens and leave with your own printed page!

Stop by the Open Lab @ Hillman to pick up a pre-made kit and create your own astrolabe. Astrolabes are handheld instruments used to measure the altitude of celestial bodies above the horizon; learn more about these ancient tools and assemble your own!

A talk by Dr. Jason Rampelt and Runxiao Zhu, University Library System

Hear directly from curators Dr. Jason Rampelt and Runxiao Zhu about their exhibit, "The Way of Heaven, Astronomy and Astrology East to West" Through the lens of select fifteenth to nineteenth-century rare books from Archives & Special Collections, you'll learn about the histories of astrological thought from China and Western Europe.
