Book Shelves and a Painting of Stephen Foster in the Center for American Music

Center for American Music Research and Travel Grant

The Center for American Music in the University of Pittsburgh Library System is pleased to announce its first annual research and travel grant. Researchers are invited to request up to $2000 to support research in the Center’s collections, which include: 

  • Foster Hall Collection (for research on Stephen C. Foster)
  • Bing Crosby Collection
  • Dave Burrell Archive*
  • Charles Henry Pace and Frankie Pace Gospel Music archive
  • Ethelbert Nevin archive
  • Joe Negri archive
  • Robert Schmertz archive
  • Adolph M. Foerster archive

Other notable materials include posters, programs, and photographs of blackface minstrelsy; nineteenth-century binders’ volumes; and an extensive collection of rare recordings.

The application deadline for the inaugural award is Friday, November 19, 2021. Applications should include (1) a project proposal which describes the intended use of the Center’s collections and the expected outcome (500–700 words), (2) a budget (not to exceed $2000), and (3) a CV (with references). The award winner will be notified by Thursday, December 23, 2021.
