Established in 1971 through the generosity of the Hoffman Family, the Gertrude and Philip Hoffman Judaic Collection is the cornerstone of Hillman Library’s holdings in Jewish Studies.
The collection, which includes more than 5000 items, is broad in its scope. It contains Jewish literature, and works on Jewish history, as well as studies related to the culture and politics of Israel and other places Jews have lived, along with texts and commentaries related to the study of Judaism.
The Hoffman Judaic Collection consists of scholarly works describing and assessing the Jewish experience over the ages; original, creative and imaginative works, produced by prominent Jewish writers and thinkers; reference works; and works in Hebrew, Yiddish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Polish, and English that reflect Jewish life and thought.
A bibliography of materials purchased through the Hoffman Judaic Fund through 1986 is shelved in Archives & Special Collections under the call number Z6375.U55 1986. Books purchased through the Hoffman Judaic fund have a special plate acknowledging the Hoffmans’ gift to the University Library System.
