Overview
3D Scanning Knowledge Base Undergraduate Student Project Assistant positions are paid undergraduate student appointments within the University Library System's (ULS) Digital Scholarship and Publishing (DSP) unit, based in Open Lab @ Hillman Library. Two Student Assistants will help research, develop, and publish an open access online knowledge base documenting best practices for 3D scanning by material type. The knowledge base will be hosted as a University of Pittsburgh LibGuide and will address a gap in available guidance for scanning materials known to be difficult to capture using structured light scanners, including textiles, glazed surfaces, and translucent or transparent materials.

This position is running starting in late August 2026 through June 2027. Student Assistants will work under the supervision of the ULS Digital Creation Specialist and will consult with project advisors from Digital Scholarship and Publishing, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Frick Fine Arts Library, the East Asian Library, and the Nationality Rooms and Intercultural Exchange Programs.
Student Assistants will:
- Receive hands-on training on the Artec Space Spider and Leo 3D scanners.
- Survey and report on existing 3D scanning documentation and instructional resources.
- Help develop a content outline and editorial guidelines for the knowledge base.
- Draft, test, and refine knowledge base entries.
- Meet with project advisors to examine relevant collection objects and discuss digitization considerations for fragile or rare materials.
- Assist in preparing a final report documenting project processes and recommendations for future expansion of the knowledge base.
Eligibility
- Undergraduate student in any school at the University of Pittsburgh.
- Completed at least two full semesters of undergraduate coursework.
- Able to commit to approximately 5 hours per week for the duration of the grant.
- No prior experience with 3D scanning or makerspace technology required.
Hourly Rate
$15/hour, approximately 5 hours per week, August 2026 through April 2027 (excluding Thanksgiving, winter, and spring recesses).
