Digital Scholarship Commons Space

Digital Scholarship Commons

The Digital Scholarship Commons

The Digital Scholarship Commons is a space on the ground floor of Hillman Library designed to support members of the Pitt community who are learning and experimenting with digital and data-intensive research and teaching. Digital Scholarship Services hold most of our workshops, events, and consultations in the Digital Scholarship Commons. The Commons also functions as open study space with access to wall-mounted presentation screens.

Digital Scholarship Computer Lab

Our 12-workstation computer lab offers 4K screens and a suite of specialized software accessible to anyone with Pitt credentials or a guest pass. The lab is sometimes closed for instruction, but you can check our workshop schedule in advance to see what’s going on.

Public Scanners and Equipment

The Digital Scholarship Commons contains several walk-up public scanners, including a flatbed scanner, a sheet-feed scanner, and a overhead book scanner.

We are also the home of the library’s microfilm viewer/scanner. Adjacent to the scanners is our Optical Character Recognition (OCR) station. This computer has ABBYY FineReader software installed to help you convert images into editable and computer-readable text. The OCR station can be booked in advance.

Digital Stewardship Lab

The Digital Stewardship Lab is a hands-on lab and access point for large-format and publication-quality digitization as well as 3D scanning.

ETD Support

The Office of Scholarly Communications and Publishing offers walk-up support for students preparing Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs).
